About

Art is a window into the soul of a culture.

John Cox is a Bahamian curator, multdisciplinary artist, and luxury brand collaborator, living and working in Nassau, Bahamas. Cox occupies a rare position in the cultural world: he is equally at home inside an institution and outside of it.

Born in Nassau in 1973, Cox trained at the Rhode Island School of Design, where he earned a BFA in Illustration and an MAT in Art Education. He returned to The Bahamas and spent over a decade on the faculty at the College of The Bahamas before joining the National Art Gallery of The Bahamas, where he rose to chief curator in 2013.

In 2014, Baha Mar appointed Cox as creative arts director — embedding cultural leadership at the heart of a multi-billion-dollar Caribbean resort for the first time. He was later named vice president of arts and culture, overseeing a collection of 100 original works in public spaces and 3,000 works on loan through a partnership with one of the region's most significant private collectors. When Rosewood Hotels launched its global PlaceMakers program in 2022, Cox was named the inaugural PlaceMaker at Rosewood Baha Mar, developing curated cultural experiences, digital discovery journeys, and exhibition programming across Nassau, New York, and Miami.

Curatorial Leadership & Collaborations

As the vice president of arts and culture at Baha Mar Resorts, Cox oversees The Current, the resort’s dedicated art center and gallery. Cox is the chief curator of the FUZE Caribbean Art Fair, created by The Current. He is also the curator of The Blue Floor, a collaboration between FUZE and SCOPE, an art fair for emerging artists during Art Week Miami. In this role, he curates groundbreaking exhibitions that elevate Bahamian art on a global stage while providing a platform for both emerging and established artists. His efforts have reshaped how Bahamian art is perceived, merging the region's cultural narratives with the luxury and accessibility of world-class hospitality spaces. Cox collaborates with luxury brands, cultural institutions, and international galleries seeking a curatorial intelligence that is deeply rooted in the Caribbean while fluent in the language of global contemporary art. He does not bring the Bahamas to a room. He brings a room to the Bahamas.

Art Practice

His own practice spans large-format mixed media painting, found-object assemblage, collage, and non-traditional printmaking — work that uses the familiar to point toward the far away. Cox’s work has been showcased in galleries and exhibitions across the globe, including France, Italy, Germany, Hong Kong, the United States, and throughout the Caribbean. Notable shows include his participation in Art Basel, where his pieces have been celebrated for their raw yet refined approach to storytelling. His art is part of major private and public collections in The Bahamas and worldwide.
